The last few decades have witnessed increased use of optical methods for medical diagnosis and treatment. For example, blood is analyzed by spectroscopic methods that involve absorption, reflection, or emission of light. In therapy, special heating lamps are sometimes used to relieve pain. Ordinary light sources such as incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps and other specialized light sources are used in all these applications.

In 1960, a totally new light source appeared - the laser. The word laser had already appeared in the writings of Plinius, the famous, first century A.D historian. " The laser is numbered among the most miraculous gifts of nature and lends itself to a variety of applications" (Plinius, XII,49). Plinius' laser was a herbal plant that grew on the shores of the Mediterranean and was used by the Romans for therapy.

How Lasers Work:

A laser harnesses an excitation source, often a flashlamp, to drive photons from the laser medium. The light generated has very distinct properties and a single wavelength.
