Body Contouring

What Is Body Contouring And What Is Involved?

Many people don’t understand what is body contouring and what this involves. Body contouring is a medical term used to describe the sculpturing of a body using a range of cosmetic and plastic surgery techniques and does not refer to exercise and body building in a gym. There are basically two types of body contouring techniques.

body contouringThe first technique to explore when finding out about what is body contouring involves the moulding or shaping of fatty deposits under the skin. In the same way a sculptor uses clay to create a sculpture, the surgeon uses fat to mould the body to a specific shape. This can involve just the removal of fat in specific areas of the body as well as the strategic placement of fat in other areas of the body. Body contouring, however, often uses both these as just the removal of fat can leave the body misshapen. This removal and replacement of fat can be done by using surgical techniques or by liposuction which uses equipment to remove fatty deposits.

The second form of body contouring involves remodelling the actual structure of the body. This means that the surgeon needs to deal with the bones that make up the skeleton of the body. The most well known of these types of procedure is of course the Rhinoplasty or more commonly referred to as a nose job. Generally the nose is broken and then reshaped to conform to certain specifications. The nose bone can also be filed down and the skin can be changed in the remodelling process.

Newer types of body contouring surgeries are making their way into the field of plastic and cosmetic surgery all the time. For example, did you know that you can even increase your height with a prosthesis that is placed within the leg bone? This makes it very important to choose a plastic surgeon who is up to date with all the latest innovations and procedures that are being used in cosmetic surgery today. For instance, sound waves and laser therapy are now also being used in body contouring to mould and shape the fat in the body and a much less invasive manner than the traditional liposuction techniques.

Remember to seek the best advice before putting your body in the hands of just any surgeon for body contouring. There are many plastic surgeons out there who are qualified to perform a wide range of procedures but just do not have the creative artistry that is required for complete body contouring. Make sure that you also find out about every procedure that will be performed on you during the body contouring process so that you are not surprised by the result once the changes have been made. Plastic surgery is permanent and although some procedures are reversible, most body contouring techniques cannot be undone.
