New dermatological laser heralds scar-free days

Monday, 25 August 2008 – Since her pre-teen years Ashley* had always dreamed about her matric farewell, then her twenty-first party and, of course, her wedding day.  She would always picture herself dressed in a variety of beautiful gowns with thin spaghetti straps and sexy, open backs.  But Ashley was never able to make any of those dreams come true.

Instead, at all of these important junxtures in her life, she had always worn a gown with a high neckline that completely covered her back.  What was worse, she could never wear any summer tops or dresses that exposed these parts of her body even partially.  The teenage acne that took hold of Ashley simply never let go and, even well into her adulthood, she had the most terrible scars as a result thereof.

“When I first met Ashley she was well into her forties and terribly self-conscious of the scars on her back.  Today, she is brimming with confidence.  During her most recent treatment session she told me the other day that she had bought herself a beautiful new designer evening gown that has a completely open back, and that she was planning on wearing it to a spring charity ball,” says Dr Gordon Cohen, a well-known Johannesburg based aesthetic specialist.

Dr Cohen directs the praise for Ashley’s scar-free back and return of confidence towards a new aesthetic device that he is employing in his practice.  The device, a Sciton ProFractional, is a dermatological laser that is used in the treatment of a variety of skin conditions – with some staggeringly beautiful results.

“I am very impressed with what the Sciton ProFractional can do,” says Dr Cohen.  “Every patient that I have used it on so far is ecstatic with the results achieved, and so am I.”

Although the Sciton ProFractional is a device that has an aesthetically improved effect on the skin, it cannot be found at beauty clinics.  It is a medical device and for medically trained professionals to be able to use it, they need special training.

According to Dr Cohen, the Sciton ProFractional quickly and effectively treats skin wrinkles, acne scars, skin tone, skin texture and pigmentation in a ‘single pass’ treatment.  “This means that, every time the laser passes a section of the skin, it treats all of these conditions simultaneously.  What is more, the treatment is pain free.  Patients recover rapidly from both the treatment and the condition, and much fewer treatments are necessary than with any other device that I have come across.”

With the popularity of the Sciton ProFractional treatment increasing daily the word on its effectiveness is spreading fast.  More of these devices should soon be available at more medical facilities across the country, where aesthetic dermatological treatments are the order of the day.
